Conversation Classes

Conversation classes are an important testing ground for students to apply what they have learned in casual day-to-day conversations. Moreover, they are a place where moral values and cultural ideas are exchanged and, in this context, they are just as valuable to conversation teachers as they are to students. Both parties learn from each other and, in so doing, grow as individuals.

Conversation classes with Chaucer college students are a great way for the student to practise their English but it is also an opportunity for them to make an English friend. We talk about a lot of different subjects – students want to discuss things they have seen in and around Canterbury and London and I often find I can act as a cultural bridge by explaining to the students different aspects of English life. Of course, so much contact with Japanese students gives a fascinating glimpse of Japanese culture and it also encourages me to think about the way we live in England and the way we use the English language .

I really enjoy the conversation classes and the life here at Chaucer College. One of the main advantages of these classes for the students is that they are in a more informal setting than their daytime subject classes. This particularly helps the shyer student who, as the classes continue, begins to build up their confidence and to feel able to ask me questions, for example, about English language, English habits, English food etc. Also, as I get to know the students as individuals, I can tailor the classes to their interests and, as they get to know me and my life, we can begin to have more natural, relaxed conversations. It is a great way for them to get a better understanding of this country and its culture and to improve their speaking and listening skills.
